How do I get Google to stop showing previous searches?

Although having access to your recent searches could be a valuable asset to many, it might not be the most sought after feature if you are using a public laptop. What is more, your search history can be used against you once a spooky colleague gets their hands on them or worse, when a sibling finds out about your most private secrets. Although the scenario sounds terrifying, it is totally avoidable.

Whether you are using an Android, iOS phone, or are searching Google on a PC or laptop, there are multiple ways of getting rid of search results:

How to Stop Google showing search results

The Web and Activity feature in Google does not only record your search history but whatever you do on other Google services such as YouTube, Google Drive, and so on. To avoid an extensive recording of your data, you need to turn this feature off. Follow the instruction below to achieve just that:

  1. On an Android phone or tablet, you will need to head to the ‘Settings app,’ Scroll down and find ‘Google’ and ‘Manage your Google account.’
  2. What you need to look for here is the ‘Data and Personalization’ section.
  3. You will find Web and app activity under the ‘activity controls’ option; turn it off to block Google from tracking your daily online activities.

Turning off Web and Activity on a Computer:

  1. The process might be a bit more online on a computer; first of all, you will need to visit the activity controls page with a signed-in Google account.
  2. Scrolling down, you will find the Web and Activity option; turn it off.

Blocking Google from recording your activities on an iPhone or an iPad:

  1. You will need to visit the Activity controls page on an iPhone or an iPad again to sign in to your Google account.
  2. The rest follows the same as it would in a PC; just scroll the page down to find Web and Activity and turn it off.

With Web and Activity turned off, Google will not show any previous searches from now on, but what about the old ones?

We can feel the frustration in you; you might have turned Web and Activity off, but your previous embarrassing searches are right before your eyes. For that matter, you need to clear the browser history; stick with us to explain to you how you will steer clear of your previous Google search results on different Browsers:

Deleting Chrome Browser history

Android devices:

  1. Open the Chrome app in your device, reach out to the three-dots icon on the top right, and tap on ‘History’ (on some devices, the address bar might be at the bottom, if that is the case, you should swipe up the address bar to find ‘History’ ).
  2. After tapping on History, you will find ‘Clear browsing data.’
  3. Before finalizing the removal, select the period in which you want your data removed (it could be the past 24 hours, past week, or all of your browsing sessions). Note that you can choose which data you want to delete; stored data on a chrome browser includes cookies, cache data, saved passwords, auto fillings, and website settings.
  4. After adjusting the settings, you can tap on ‘clear data’ and get rid of your search history.

PC or a laptop:

  1. To clear browsing history on a desktop device, head to the Chrome app on your PC or laptop, open the app and find the three-dots icon at the top right.
  2. Find History and click on the enlarge icon beside it to view all options.
  3. Click on ‘Clear browsing data.’
  4. On the box that has appeared on your screen, look for a drop-down menu and select the exact period in which you want your search history removed.
  5. Just like with android devices, you can select which exact data you want to be removed before finalizing the deletion.
  6. Tap on ‘Clear data’ to end the process.
  • iPhone or iPad
  1. Open the Chrome app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Reach out to the three-dots icon in the bottom right to find ‘History.’
  3. Look for ‘Clear browsing data’ after expanding History by tapping on it.
  4. Check browsing data and any other item you want to delete.
  5. Some items might be checked by default; you might consider unchecking them if you wish to keep them on your device.
  6. Tap on ‘Clear browsing data’ and ‘done’ after the job is finished.

Removing Google search results on Safari

  • iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
  1. Head to the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. After finding the safari append tapping on it, tap on Clear History and Website data to remove your browsing data (note that clearing your browsing data will have no impact on your AutoFill information).
  3. If you are willing to clean more than just your browsing history, head to settings > Safari again, but this time find ‘advanced’ and after tapping on it, look for the ‘website data’ option.
  4. You will then find ‘Remove all browsing data’ after tapping on which, you will have all your web data removed.
  5. If you wish to surf the net without leaving a trace, you can turn on private browsing.

Mac

Clearing browsing data is much easier on Mac:

  1. Open the Safari browser on your laptop.
  2. Head to the menu and find ‘Safari’; click on it to find ‘clear history’ in the middle.
  3. Click on ‘clear history’ to remove your browsing data but note that you can also opt for different periods when doing so.

The Bottom line

Although the above methods work 100%, it is best to browse privately or in incognito mode to avoid awkward situations when using a public device or browsing on your friend’s phone or laptop.

Google Chrome will warn you when you are about to type into risky text boxes

Google is planning to do something about secure-looking HTTPS websites which can house insecure HTTP forms for you to fill in your passwords and other personal data.

Coming this October, Chrome 86 will protect against HTTP forms on HTTPS sites. As announced on an official Chrome blog post, beginning in M86, Chrome will warn users when they try to complete forms on secure (HTTPS) pages that are submitted insecurely. These “mixed forms” (forms on HTTPS sites that do not submit on HTTPS) are a risk to users’ security and privacy. Information submitted on these forms can be visible to eavesdroppers, allowing malicious parties to read or change sensitive form data.

How will this feature work and stops you from typing into risky text boxes?

Specifically, Chrome will be making the following changes to communicate the risks associated with mixed form submission:

  • Autofill will be disabled in mixed forms.
  • Note: On mixed forms with login and password prompts, Chrome’s password manager will continue to work. Chrome’s password manager helps users input unique passwords, and it is safer to use unique passwords, even on forms that are submitted insecurely than to reuse passwords.
  • When a user begins filling out a mixed form, they will see warning text alerting them that the form is not secure.
  • If a user tries to submit a mixed form, they will see a full-page warning alerting them of the potential risk and confirming if they’d like to submit anyway.

Google has also previously tried to alert users to this issue by removing the lock icon when it detected an HTTP form, but the company says, “Users found this experience unclear, and it did not effectively communicate the risks associated with submitting data in insecure forms.”

Google’s ‘Swirl’ 3D Ad Option is now globally Available for Display and Video 360 Campaigns

One of the most wanted features of the last year, which Google has been working on is now globally rolled out. Google has announced that its 3D ad format Swirl is now available to all Display & Video 360 customers globally following a beta program involving brands such as Adidas, Belvedere Vodka, and Nissan.

This feature was being tested for the last year for a very long time and is now accessible to all advertisers and brands.

How does the new “Swirl” format work?

The new Swirl format allows advertisers and brand owners to offer a 3D form of their promotions, which is also interactive.

The digital information world explains the cool new feature in more detail by clarifying that the Swirl 3D ad format involves banner ads that enable marketers to use interactive 3D product models in their promotions. Google wrote in a blog post that Swirl 3D ad format allows consumers to engage with a specific product like the product is right in front of them.

Consumers can rotate, zoom, and even expand the product in the ad. With Swirl ads, marketers can illustrate changes in behavior, unique product features, new technology performance, and many more. The company described various campaigns that have already been created using the Swirl 3D ad format. Nissan Spain used the Swirl 3D ad format to show off new features of Qashqai SUV. Adidas Latin America also used the format to advertise the Adidas Ultra Boost 2019 shoe.

Note that as interesting and useful the Swirl feature is; it also has some difficulties to start using it. For example, it needs technical and professional skills to be created. Developing complex 3D presentations can be challenging and sometimes really hard, but from my point of view, it is worth the effort since Swirl ads can be a great option for advertisers to boost engagement, and brands can maximize brand messaging using this format. As more platforms are moving towards AR

(augmented reality) and VR (virtual reality) presentation formats, Swirl ad format will provide Google another way to improve its ad offerings.

How to use the “Swirl” 3d ad option?

Previously the swirl feature was only available to limited brands such as Adidas, Nissan, and Belvedere Vodka. But from today on, the new update is available to everybody and all brands and businesses workwise.

If you want to create a Swirl campaign, you can upload 3D assets to Google Web Designer. Advertisers can also edit campaign models using Poly. These ads run across Google Ad Manager Inventory, which means that your campaign will get large-scale reach.

Google Adds Fact Check alerts to Image Search Results

Fact-checking has become an important focus of the internet world, such as social media and search engines. As another step on fighting misinformation, Google Adds ‘Fact Check’ Label to Image Search Results from today.

From now on, when you search for an image that is edited or is providing false information, you’ll see a label beneath it, declaring that you should not believe what you see.

The purpose of this change is to help people navigate issues around determining the authenticity of images and make more informed decisions about the content they consume.

Google has explained the fact check labels like this:

“Now, when you search on Google Images, you may see a “Fact Check” label under the thumbnail image results. When you tap one of these results to view the image in a larger format, you’ll see a summary of the fact check that appears on the underlying web page.”

That is like a relief for lots of people who have been tricked by fake image edits and been pranked this way. Google is now there to help you find out about an image’s true story.

Take the example of the pictures which went viral a few weeks ag of some huge sharks swimming on a highway in the middle of Houston. I’m sure, so many naïve people thought of these images to be real and were shocked. With Google’s new fact-checking labels, you’ll not be pranked by editors or fake news anymore.

Now when you search the image of sharks swimming in Houston, you’ll see Google has added the “Fact Check” label below the thumbnail.

To see the true story behind the image, just tap on the preview of the image to see the larger size. Then, Google will display a summary of the information contained on the web page where the image is featured.

After Twitter, we have google now, which has provided its users with powerful fact-checking options which would surely have a great impact on the spread of misinformation all over the world.
